Authenticity Reading
Authenticity reading—also known as sensitivity reading—focuses on how accurately and respectfully a manuscript represents specific lived experiences, identities, and cultural contexts. In this service, I read with attention to the first generation Khmer and Asian American experience (and queer, trans, and nonbinary American experiences) helping ensure that characters, narratives, and cultural details feel grounded, nuanced, and free from harmful stereotypes or unintentional misrepresentation.
Although commonly used for fiction, authenticity reading can also strengthen memoir and nonfiction by helping ensure cultural context and lived experiences are communicated clearly and thoughtfully to readers.
Authenticity reading includes a Discovery Session to understand your manuscript, characters, and intended portrayal of identity and culture, one round of detailed feedback focused on representation, cultural accuracy, and lived-experience authenticity across narrative and character development, and a Follow-Up Session after you receive your notes to discuss recommendations, clarify concerns, and support you in revising with confidence and care.
